Honing In: Selected Artists from the Thursday Outdoor Painters
The sunny skies and verdant landscapes in Southwest Florida are favorite subjects for plein air painters and for decades artists have come to Southwest Florida to paint its beaches, nature preserves and historic sites. With so much happening in front of their easels, it is imperative artists focus their attention on a single subject or one area of the landscape.
Plein air is French for “the open air” and is a term used to describe paintings executed outside. Artists have always painted from nature in the open air, but with the advent of oil paints in tubes during the 19th Century it became much easier and more popular. Many of the French Impressionists painted outdoors where they could directly observe the changing sunlight on their subjects.
The artists in this exhibition all participate in Thursday Outdoor Painters. The informal group meets at a different location each week. Painting commences at 9 am. After an intense morning of painting, the group retreats to a local restaurant for lunch and a lively conversation about art.
The Thursday Outdoor Painters group publishes seasonal schedules which are available at the Naples Art Association or through the groups organizer Irma Barnet, (239) 593-7708 home, (239) 971-7724 cell. The exhibition will be on view in Gallery 104.
