Telling a Story: Narrative Art

Artists are invited to deliver their artwork on November 26 or 27 for the jury process. There are seven cash awards totaling $1,000. Exhibition Juror and Awards Judge, Kirk Ke Wang. The exhibition will be on view in the Frederick O. Watson Gallery.

Narrative art illustrates or tells a story. It usually describes self-explanatory events from daily life or those drawn from a text, well-known folk tale or myth. Storytelling is central to the history of visual art and appears in every culture and historical time period.

Exhibition Juror and Awards Judge, Kirk Ke Wang is Professor of Visual Arts at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida. He is a painter, sculptor, photographer, mixed-media artist and an educational software developer. He was born in Shanghai, China and received Master of Fine Art degrees from both the Nanjing Normal University in Nanjing, China and the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Mr. Wang travels frequently between China and the United States to promote art, education and culture. He maintains studios in Tampa, New York and Shanghai. In addition to teaching and creating art, he led a team of experts to develop a computer learning system for children, which has now been used by over one-thousand schools nationally.

Mr. Wang’s art has been exhibited by museums internationally, nationally and in the Tampa Bay area at venues including the Museum of Modern Art, PS1 in New York and the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. His work has been collected by museums, galleries and private collectors in the United States and Asia. He was awarded the bronze medal by the Cultural Ministry of China, and has received numerous grants and foundation awards from institutions including the National Endowment for the Arts, the Freeman Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs.

Reception, Friday, December 1, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Galleries are open with free admission during published exhibition dates. Hours are 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Saturday. There is a $10 suggested donation when attending the reception (free for Naples Art Association contributors). Reception generously sponsored by Creative Catering and Grace Lake Florist.
